Comparing Selfies Across Time
Disguised Selfies
EBI:
Omar Victor Diop Review |
1. He takes selfies of himself as forgotten historical figures of Africa, he said he is aiming to revisit the history and the heritage of African and Afro-descent. 2. He specifically chose these figures as they are forgotten from history, possibly due to racism or over looked at. The idea came when he discovered them through reading and research. He chose them specifically because they were sent to America and were slaves, soldiers or prisoners. And later on they became scientist, musician etc.
3. Through his work he can remember them and hopefully his work can bring attention to these historical figures as they aren't highly recognised 4. His advice to young people is to start the career now and that they don't need an expensive camera because now a days people have phones with built-in cameras. Also to not hide your photos and to show it to the world and everyone to see it. 5. Personally, if i had a choice of becoming someone in my selfies, it would be... |
Costume Selfies
- What characters did you become and why?
I became a giant with one-eye, other wise known as cyclops in the Greek mythology, the reason why i chose a cyclopes is because i find Greek and Roman mythology quite interesting in the concepts of the different gods and creatures.
- What materials did you use?
We used a plastic bags, coloured chalks, Different types of material for the clothes.
- What went well?
I personally believe the drawing on the plastic bag and my persistent work. I messed up at the start but, i didn't let that stop me and i found a solution to make it better.
- How could you make it better next time?
Try to speed up my work and experiment with different types of characters.
- What inspired you about Omar Victor Diop's work?
I like the fact he represents historical figures in his art work and that he actually likes to discover more historical African figures.
- Was the mask a good addition to the costume selfies?
My favourite addition to the costume was the masks, i like that we had the ability/option to design it ourselves and choose who to become.
- If you are performing a character in the image, is it still a self-portrait?
There's a difference in opinion but however i believe yes, it's still a self-portrait as self-portrait doesn't necessarily have to mean to show your body and face only, you can cosplay others, and that still can be considered a self-portrait.

Mask & Costumes Selfies
My mask was directly inspired by the artist Saul Steinberg. Saul Steinberg was a Romanian-American cartoonist/illustrator. He produced these paper bags as mask and it's said that he saw it as if everyone wears a mask, whether real or metaphorically. And i quite liked his perspective and i would say that i think quite similar to him as well. I enjoyed making them as well as its a lot of fun. We used paper bags, colored chalk and a few people used a printed piece of paper and glued it on top.

I would say my determination and persistent personality helped me to create my mask as i messed up at the start but instead of before leaving it and moving on, i fixed my mistake and carried on with the task.
Also this was my first time using a camera so i learnt something different by using and playing with the camera. |
I feel that if i used the camera a little longer that i could learn more about it and its use, which could help me in the future. Also i could've used my time a little more productively by possibly creating another mask...

Mirror Selfies
WWW:I felt that this gave me my first experience with going outside and actually taking photos, plus this allowed me to be more creative by trying out different types of pictures.
|
EBI:I think that if i had more time i could produce more types of pictures, also i think i should've tried more angles and different positions, because i think that i was limited to my space.
|
Research task:
- How long have mirror selfies been a trend for?
Its believed that the first photo selfie was believed to have occurred in 1914
- Why might a photographer use a mirror to take a selfie?

Selfie Instruction Collage
- Select the 6 images that you feel best represent you.
- Make a pile of these 6 pages on your desk.
- Take the top page and cut a hole in it (Note: it doesn't have to be perfect). Put both pieces at bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear it in half. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut out a shape at random. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut round an object. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear a strip from the (top or bottom) edge. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page, and cut or tear it in whichever way you choose. Put the pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Place the A3 sheet of cartridge paper in front of you (portrait or landscape format).
- Without altering them, arrange the pieces of paper from your pile on the A3 sheet to create a pleasing collage. Carefully photograph your first arrangement.
- Again, without altering them, repeat this process, re-arranging the various elements on the A3 sheet until you are happy with the results. Photograph carefully.
- You may now adapt the pieces in any way you like - cutting, tearing etc. Make a new collage, this time sticking them to the A3 sheet of cartridge paper.
- Photograph your finished collage carefully.
- On your Selfies page add the title Selfie Instruction Collage.
- Copy and paste this list of instructions.
- Add a Gallery and upload the images you have taken today of your collages.
- Write a brief evaluation (WWW/EBI) reflecting on what it was like to make a collage by following instructions and how you feel about the results.
- Answer the question: Is the collage a self-portrait?
- If you complete all of this, try experimenting with layering the collage using the single-colour function on the photocopier.
WWW:I felt that my collage went pretty well, I think this helped me to have an experience and a grasp of how it feels to make a collage. Also the flipping over the collage, I personally think that this improved my work by adding more stuff and making it pop out and stand out.
|
EBI:I believe that if i had chosen a different colours, my collage could possibly stand out or may have looked a bit nicer. Also i think that i should’ve played with different shapes because personally i think it was quite basic. Also i think that if i played more around with it and adjusted the position of some of the objects, it could make it better.
|
Is the collage a self-portrait?
- Personally i believe yes, due to the fact I produced my selves through all these photos, ranging from my picture of my self as a kid, to the leopard. They all represent in some form or way, and in my opininon, believe that self-portraits are photos of your-self produced in any way.

Narrative Sequencing: Lee Friedlander's Shadow Selfies
WWW:I believe that my story was one of the best aspect of my narrative sequence.
|
EBI:I think that we could of experimented with different storys/narrative and also if we presented it much neater by sticking it properly and straight. Plus taking more care and focus and not point my arrow the wrong direction.
|
- What is the role of the shadows in the sequences?
The roles of the shadows is to present the narrative in multiple ways and could lead to different point of views.
- How did adding words impact the images?
This showed the person who views the image a different point of view and a different story to them, compared to theirs.
- What has narrative sequencing taught us about the nature of photography?
It showed that this can lead to different understandings and different stories in different mind.

Extending Writing
In Francesca Woodman’s photograph I can see a door which two humans are behind it. Also, we can see another border covering one of the persons in the photograph whilst the other is using a paper to hide their identity. Another element is the shadows used in the photograph, we can see a darker tone towards the right of the picture but, a lighter side on the left. And the use of frame in a frame is used in the picture. In Kenneth Josephson’s photograph we can see a larger scale of use of frame in a frame. The main subject in Josephson's photograph is the hand which we can see through the frame. Also, Josephson's photograph is more of a candid style whilst Woodman’s is more of a set up photograph. Another major contrast between the two picture is the location. In Josephson's we can see it is located in the outside whilst, Woodman's is inside a building or house. Woodman's photograph is quite smart, she uses both shadow and disguised selfie in her photo but, in some regards, some would classify it as a mirror selfie because of the door, the door looks like a mirror. However, Josephson’s is a more of a shadow selfie because we can see the shadow of him on the car reflecting due to the lighting.
In both Woodman’s and Josephson's photograph, we can see the use of framework/ frame in a frame. In Josephson's, he implements the use of frame in a frame in an intelligent way, he first uses the frame which shows the hand, but also, because of the shadow we can see the frame on the car. In comparison, Woodman’s is a more subtle type of frame in a frame, she uses the door to implement the use of frame in a frame. But also, the border in front of the person can also be called a frame in a frame.
Woodman’s photograph is interesting. I like how she used the door in such a way that a debate/question is raised whether it is a mirror or door. And the use of the people makes it more interesting because of the way they are used in the photo. I find it interesting and mysterious the way the person on the right only shows one hand, possibly trying to hang on to the border? In Josephson’s I find it quite mysterious in the way the hand is hanging, it could be that the man had died or is just resting his hand. Also, it is creative how he created a mirror/shadow selfie in one, because of the sun he was able to include two types of selfies, the shadow on the car, which can also be counted as a reflection.
I appreciate Josephson’s image the most because I like how implements different genre in ways which are creative and surprising. Also, I like his work in terms of frame in a frame because he uses it in a more unexpected way in comparison to Woodman’s. Furthermore, the fact that his photograph is more of a candid style making it more interesting. For my further project, I would like to include elements from Josephson’s photograph by using the work of shadows and frame in a frame.

Cubist Selfie
WWW:Personally, I believe that my work is quite interesting in the fact that I left my work to be more simple, rather than making it complex/confusing. Also the play with shapes, I think that the use of different shapes for example, a circle.
|
EBI:I think that if I edited/refined my work it could make it more exciting. Also possibly using strips, this could make it more of an illusion. And if I played with shades, so that if one side is light and the other is dark, symbolising a 2 faced person.
